As a thriving 19th century maritime/mercantile center, the community was chosen as the Dare County seat of government in 1870. In 1899, Manteo became the Outer Banks’ first incorporated town.
With 20 chapters illustrated with hundreds of photos, this 304-page hardback explores Manteo’s growth, its near-demise as businesses moved from Roanoke Island to Outer Banks beach towns, and the town’s revitalization as a coastal destination.
