Back in Print After 25 Years:
MANTEO: A ROANOKE ISLAND TOWN

For readers of the novel BETWEEN TIDES, discover this fictional story’s outgrowth from the factual underpinnings of MANTEO: A ROANOKE ISLAND TOWN.

The definitive history of Manteo, this pictorial history has been on island coffee-tables for 25 years. Now back in print, MANTEO: A ROANOKE ISLAND TOWN depicts the evolution of an American Indian settlement whose fate was sealed after their encounters with the first English colonists in America, its early days as a fishing/farming community, and the site of the Civil War-era Freedmen’s Colony. As a thriving 19th century maritime/mercantile center, the community was chosen as the Dare County seat of government in 1870. In 1899, Manteo became the Outer Banks’ first incorporated town.

With 20 chapters illustrated with hundreds of photos, this 304-page hardback explores Manteo’s growth, its near-demise as businesses moved from Roanoke Island to Outer Banks beach towns, and the town’s revitalization as a coastal destination.

An exploration of boat building, fishing, hunting, and farming, life-saving stations and lighthouses, schools and churches, and island inns and shops and restaurants, MANTEO brings life on an island alive. Celebrating coastal landmarks and lifeways are chapters featuring the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, The Lost Colony outdoor drama, the Elizabethan Gardens, Fort Raleigh, and Roanoke Island Festival Park’s representative 16th century ship, the Elizabeth II.

First published in 1999 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Manteo’s incorporation as a town, the book has been out of print for nearly 25 years. In 2024, MANTEO: A ROANOKE ISLAND TOWN was reprinted in celebration of the town’s 125th anniversary, featuring a new introduction that highlights events and accomplishments in the past quarter century of the town’s history.
